Tokyo expects two bumper events

2019 Rugby World Cup and 2020 Olympics are two events which will catapult Tokyo into the limelight of the sports world. Olympic Committees and broadcasters have visited Japan’s capital in big numbers and already wanted to book hotels. To their surprise they were asked to wait until the hotels had set their rates.

Japan’s hospitality industry stands on the brink of an overhaul. A new law is coming into effect soon, which opens the door for small guesthouses and also AirBnB and other apartment providers. It won’t revolutionize the Japanese hotel industry overnight but everyone is carefully observing what will happen.

Hotels expect that room rates will come under pressure as new service providers enter the market. What is good news in the long run is currently leading to delays. Hotels are reluctant to set their rates for Rugby World Cup (RWC) and Olympic Games. As is common practice in Japan, everyone looks at the competitors – and so no one moves.

Everyone involved in RWC preparations would expect that hotels are happy to quote for group bookings for September 2019. This is not the case. It is a wait and see game. Many hotels have indicated Japan update Tokyo expects two bumper events that they will release their RWC rates in only March and April. We proudly present: Keio Plaza Therefore Khaya is happy to introduce you to Keio Plaza, a modern 4-star hotel in one of the best parts of Tokyo.
