Lisbon jumps at the opportunity
The Coronavirus Pandemic claims yet another unsuspecting victim. Istanbul, the culture-rich capital of Turkey was set to host the Champions League Final this year. Their hosting duties will, unfortunately, have to wait for another year.
The current situation has forced UEFA’s hand, and this means the 2020 edition of the Champions League final will be relocated to Lisbon.
Que Portugal. A nation that took preventative measures long before most. Their successful lockdown has meant that to date it has only had 37 000 cases of Coronavirus. Portugal had hosted the 2016 Euro Championship showing that they can handle a major event.
The Portuguese capital is set to host the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final from August 12-23. All ties will be played as single leg across two different stadiums in Lisbon – the Estadio da Luz and the Estadio Jose Alvalade.
Sponsors of the event have already indicated that they will not be hosting a big hospitality program, and uncertainty remains whether any programs will be hosted at all.
Alas, not all news is bad for Istanbul. UEFA has vowed that they will be receive the right to host the 2021 final, with St Petersburg and Munich’s hosting duties postponed for another year.
